What happened to the leading families of ancient Rome?
For many centuries in Ancient Rome the leaders of the city and empire were very frequently from only a few families, like the Aemilii, Claudii, Julii, Cornelii, Fabii or Valerii. With time those names (and their influence) gradually dissapeared from the mainstream of history. I wonder if there are still descendants from those families living in Italy and if so whether they still have some of the high status their ancestors had. If not, what happened to them? Did they disappear after the fall of the (Western) Roman Empire?

No, today they're known as the Five Families of New York (the Gambino Family, the Bonnano Family, the Genovese Family, the Lucchese Family, and the Colombo Family).
